The Affordable High Speed Internet Solution
One - Way Broadband Satellite System

This is how it works.

  •      You enter the URL of your requested website, e.g. www.acscomputers.ie.   This data request will be transmitted via your existing internet connection to the data centre.
  •     There, the requested data will be found and sent to the skyDSL satellite.
  •     From the satellite, the data is transmitted to your computer.  Just like sat-TV, huge amounts of data can be sent to your satellite dish in the blink of an eye.
  •     The data received is processed by your PCI-card or skyDSL box and is prepared for your computer.
  •     Now you can see the requested site on your screen.

So, why use skyDSL?

Quite simple really.  It's the cheapest, most cost efficient system in Ireland!
Check out Satellite Broadband on Google.ie to compare prices, download speeds and hardware costs.
Here's my own pricing example:
I have the original basic package at €9.90 per month and I've never seen the download speed less than 1500kbs and it's very often more than 1800kbs.  (I gave up checking it after a while - it's so consistent!)

(Please note that this was before the new pricing schedule came into effect in early November 2007 and although the packages now cost more, there is now an unlimited download level.)

Technical prerequisites to use skyDSL

In order to use skyDSL, you need a telephone line, a satellite dish and a skyDSL PCI-card or skyDSL box in addition to your computer. You can order the skyDSL PCI-card or the skyDSL box directly from skyDSL.

Generally speaking, you need free line of sight in a southerly direction at the location, where you intend to install the satellite dish.

Your PC should be compliant with the following prerequisites:

Operating system         Windows Vista, XP Service Pack 2 or 2000 Service Pack 4
Processor                    Minimum requirements: Pentium III or AMD from 500 MHz
Recommended:            Pentium IV or AMD from 1 GHz
Memory                       128 MB RAM (we recommend 256 MB)
Ports                           A free slot for your skyDSL PCI-card
Further Hardware          Modem or ISDN adapter
Browser                       MS Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc

If you intend to use a desktop PC you'll need a PCI card which fits in a PCI slot inside your PC.  This converts the satellite signal into data that your computer can understand.
If you intend to use a laptop/notebook then you need to use the skyDSL box.  This also contains an analog modem (56K) and an ISDN terminal adapter (64K) to use as the uplink.
The skyDSL box is totally independent of any operating system.  There is nothing to install in the computer and it will work with PC's running Windows, Linux, Solaris, etc or Apple Macs and it will give you networking capabilities to connect several machines to the skyDSL satellite using a straightforward networking switch/router.
