Broadband is great!
Once you’ve tried broadband internet speeds you’ll never want to go back to those slow downloads again! If you want fast internet access to download data, music or video files then broadband is a must.
There are several ways that broadband can be supplied, all using different technologies.
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)
This is provided via your telephone line and you can make or receive telephone calls while surfing the internet. Your local telephone exchange has to be 'broadband enabled' before you can get the service.
Cable
If you can get cable TV then your service provider will, more than likely, be able to provide broadband also.
Wireless
This technology utilises an aerial fixed to your premises and is dependent on line of sight to the broadband suppliers transmitter.
Mobile Broadband
Supplied by mobile 'phone companies this technology is very handy especially for notebook users on the move. Utilised by a USB modem similar to, but a bit bigger than a USB flash drive/memory stick it can provide 3G broadband speeds in those areas where it is transmitted.
Satellite Broadband Systems
Data is sent from broadband satellites approximately 23,500 miles up in space to a dish in the same way as satellite TV.
There are two main systems comprising of - 'one-way' and 'two-way'.
One-way satellite broadband systems use a normal telephone landline to provide the 'uplink' to request web pages, etc. and the satellite then streams the data back (downlink) via a satellite dish and either an internal or an external decoder/modem to your computer.
Two-way satellite broadband systems use the satellite dish to provide both the uplink and the downlink to send and receive data.
